Shahina Waseem, known as the 'Chilli Queen,' holds an impressive record of 97 consecutive wins in competitive chilli eating. Initially nervous in her first competition 14 years ago, she has since become the UK's undefeated champion. Beyond competing, Waseem founded the League of Fire (LoF) in 2019, the official global governing body for the sport, which is now a certified extreme sport.
The LoF is making significant strides, preparing for its first competition in Asia and securing an official prize sponsor, a first in the history of competitive chilli eating. This achievement means all contestants will receive monetary rewards. Waseem is planning her comeback for this year, aiming to reach 100 wins, and is seeking the perfect opportunity to compete again.
Competitive chilli eating demands intense physical and mental preparation. Waseem emphasizes lining her stomach with a large meal, often a milkshake with a peanut butter banana sandwich or a cheeseburger, to prepare for the extreme heat of peppers that can range from 2,500 to over 1.8 million Scoville units. Failure to prepare can lead to excruciating pain, stomach cramps, and heartburn, with some contestants comparing the ordeal to childbirth.
Despite the gruel and often unpleasant aftermath, which can include vomiting and mandatory milk chugging backstage to expel capsaicin, Waseem finds reward in her success and in breaking down gender barriers in the sport. She has also been honored with a newly cultivated chilli named 'Rose of Shahina' after her, measuring around two million Scoville units.
