Grassroots sports clubs across the UK and Ireland are facing a severe funding crisis, evidenced by an overwhelming response to Flutter's Cash4Clubs programme. More than 1,000 clubs applied for one of the 250 available grants of £2,000, underscoring a critical need for financial support.
Recent studies reveal that 40 percent of adult grassroots clubs are canceling services due to financial strain, with a quarter uncertain about their sustainability beyond the next year. Rising operational costs, insurance premiums, and difficulties in recruiting staff and volunteers are major contributing factors.
The Cash4Clubs initiative, in partnership with Sported, has invested nearly £7 million since its inception. This year's applicants largely represent groups supporting individuals facing poverty or mental health challenges, with many also aiming to combat loneliness among older participants.
