UEFA Rule Blocks Liverpool vs. Real Madrid Clash
26 Aug
Summary
- New UEFA rule prevents same fixture at same home for three seasons.
- Liverpool and Real Madrid cannot meet at Anfield in league phase.
- Clubs could still face each other at Real Madrid's home ground.

The 2026/27 Champions League league phase draw, scheduled for Thursday, will feature an unusual restriction between Liverpool and Real Madrid. UEFA has implemented a new rule preventing the same fixture from being repeated with the same home team for three consecutive seasons.
Consequently, Liverpool cannot be drawn against Real Madrid at Anfield. This is in response to the two clubs having faced each other at Liverpool's home ground in each of the last two Champions League campaigns. Both previous encounters saw Liverpool emerge victorious.
However, the prohibition is specific to the league phase. Liverpool could still be drawn to play Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Furthermore, the rule does not extend to the knockout stages, meaning a future encounter at Anfield remains possible later in the season.
