Twins' Trade Deadline Pickup Sidelined by Thumb Injury
17 Aug
Summary
- Outfielder Alan Roden, acquired at trade deadline, injured his thumb
- Roden struggled in 12 games with Twins before injury
- Outman, another trade deadline pickup, called up to replace Roden
In the days leading up to the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Minnesota Twins made several moves to bolster their roster, acquiring 13 new players. However, only one of those players, 25-year-old outfielder Alan Roden, was immediately added to the Twins' big-league roster.
Roden, acquired in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, struggled in his first 12 games with the Twins, batting just .158 with one home run, 13 strikeouts, and no walks. Unfortunately, Roden's time with the Twins has been cut short, as he has now been placed on the injured list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.
The injury occurred when Roden collided with the left field wall while making a running catch on August 10th. He returned to action two days later but then aggravated the same thumb on a head-first slide at home plate on August 17th. Roden is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to the typical recovery timeline for a sprained thumb ligament.
To replace Roden on the roster, the Twins have called up another trade deadline acquisition, 28-year-old outfielder James Outman. Outman was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers and has 230 games of MLB experience. He will get opportunities to play and show the Twins what he can do, with his speed and power being his key assets.
The Twins are also expecting the return of starting pitcher Pablo López in early September, as he continues to recover from a strained right shoulder. Additionally, pitching prospect Connor Prielipp has been promoted to Triple-A, putting him in position for a potential September call-up to the big-league club.
