- Scott Cross departed for Georgia Tech after leading Troy to titles.

A new era begins for Troy's basketball program as it finalizes a deal to bring Howard in as head coach. This appointment follows two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances for the team.
Howard brings a wealth of experience, including three seasons at Nebraska and time on NC State's staff. His offensive skills and player development abilities impressed Troy's decision-makers. He previously served as an assistant coach at Troy from 2016 to 2018, contributing to a 2017 NCAA tournament run.
Further strengthening his connection to the Sun Belt, Howard spent three seasons as an assistant at South Alabama from 2018 to 2022. He was promoted to associate head coach during his tenure there. He now succeeds Scott Cross, who departed for Georgia Tech after leading Troy to multiple Sun Belt regular season titles and NCAA berths.
The program's consistent winning, marked by five straight 20-win seasons, has positioned it as an attractive opportunity within the Sun Belt. New athletic director Kyle George selected Howard from a competitive pool of candidates.
