Allen, a renowned defender himself, expressed disbelief at James' repeated claims that he should have been awarded the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) over Marc Gasol. During an appearance on "The Chris Vernon Show," Allen directly addressed James, stating that James never had to 'lock up' opponents to secure wins.

Allen recounted how, during the summer of 2013, many questioned why he hadn't won the DPOY award himself, rather than James. He emphasized that James was consistently the player opponents targeted, with his notable defensive plays limited to a few chase-down blocks per game. Allen dismissed the idea that James effectively defended Paul Pierce, recalling that James' departure to Miami marked a turning point. While acknowledging LeBron James as the greatest basketball player overall, Allen explicitly stated that James is not the greatest defender.
