No More Cable: Timberwolves Go All-In on DAZN Streaming

Beginning next season, Minnesota Timberwolves games will be exclusively streamed through DAZN's app, ending cable and satellite availability. This five-year agreement, with a mutual opt-out after one year, aims to foster a direct fan relationship and improve game accessibility across devices.

Timberwolves CEO Matthew Caldwell highlighted DAZN as the optimal choice for revenue, reach, and technology. The move follows the collapse of FanDuel Sports Network and broader industry trends away from struggling regional sports networks. DAZN is expanding its US presence with this and other NBA team partnerships.

Games will feature a dedicated Timberwolves hub on the DAZN app, offering live and on-demand broadcasts, pre/post-game shows, and digital content. Some games will be available nationally on platforms like Amazon Prime Video or NBC/Peacock. However, local games will exclusively be on DAZN, potentially requiring fans to subscribe to multiple platforms for different sports.

Details on the subscription cost will be released closer to the season. While DAZN's full package costs $35 per month, a Timberwolves-specific subscription will be lower. The team also plans to offer 15 free games on the app, significantly more than in previous seasons, alongside discounts for season ticket holders.

The Timberwolves will have greater creative control over broadcast talent and production, aiming to address past quality concerns. A search for a new play-by-play announcer is underway, with a focus on local feel and fan favorites returning. DAZN's advanced streaming technology is expected to provide a superior viewing experience compared to previous platforms.

The geographic coverage for DAZN streaming will be limited to Minnesota and surrounding states, with fans outside this territory requiring NBA League Pass. DAZN's platform is built for live sports streaming, promising advanced features and high-quality fan engagement.
