Elko Defends Reed Amidst QB Struggles
3 Nov
Summary
- Coach Elko trusts Marcel Reed despite struggles and interceptions.
- Backup Brady Hart hasn't received significant game time.
- Reed is among the least productive SEC quarterbacks statistically.

Texas A&M's head coach, Mike Elko, has publicly defended his decision to continue starting quarterback Marcel Reed, even amidst significant on-field struggles. Elko explained that backup quarterback Brady Hart has not yet demonstrated the necessary readiness to step into a starting role, emphasizing that Hart must showcase a higher level of play to earn more playing time.
Despite Reed's performance, which includes being tied for the SEC lead in interceptions and ranking second-to-last in completion percentage at 56.8%, Elko maintains that Reed offers the team the best opportunity for success on game days. While Reed has only thrown for over 200 yards twice this season, and just once in SEC play, Elko noted offensive efficiency improvements in parts of recent games.
Elko acknowledged that Reed has areas for improvement but stressed the importance of the entire offense improving. He indicated that the team saw glimpses of its potential with key players healthy and performing effectively, though they failed to close out a recent game against Alabama. The coach's current stance suggests Reed will remain the primary signal-caller moving forward.
