Swim England Apologizes for Club Closure Errors

Swim England has issued an apology acknowledging significant procedural and handling errors that led to the disaffiliation of the Ellesmere Titans school-based club in 2022. The governing body admitted that its investigations, particularly a second one based on unverified anonymous information, fell short of expected standards. Had these standards been met, the club might have remained operational, as it was willing to address existing safeguarding concerns.

The disaffiliation had a profound impact on young swimmers and their families, some of whom had relocated to attend Ellesmere College. Swim England now recognizes its failure to consider these consequences. The review of the closure also highlighted disjointed decision-making, poor oversight, and a lack of complaint policies, with former CEO Jane Nickerson criticized for her role.

The organization stressed a commitment to improving its processes to ensure future handling of safeguarding concerns is confidential, robust, and fair. Swim England also condemned any toxic culture that shames or excludes swimmers, emphasizing the need for an inclusive environment for all members of the aquatics community.
