The ancestral village of Indian cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav, Hathauda in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, was alive with jubilant celebrations following India's triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final. The victory, secured on the final ball of the 19th over against New Zealand, ignited festivities that lasted through Monday.
Villagers, along with Suryakumar's grandfather, uncles, and other relatives, watched the match intently on a large screen erected outside the captain's ancestral home. Cheers and fireworks erupted immediately after the decisive wicket fell. The celebrations extended into the following day with traditional drumming and arrivals from neighboring areas.
The family's devotion was evident with a series of prayers offered on Sunday for the team's success. Suryakumar's uncle participated in a special puja and aarti at Markandey Mahadev temple, while his mother visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi to seek blessings.
Even before the match began, the atmosphere was electric, with family and villagers assembling at the house. Suryakumar's grandfather expressed pride, noting his grandson's refined play as captain. Despite Suryakumar's early dismissal, the villagers remained optimistic, confident in the score already achieved.
