A memorial service was held for George Forster, a lifelong Sunderland AFC supporter who died in February at the age of 99. Forster, who was just eight months shy of his 100th birthday, had been a dedicated fan since 1934 and was recognized as the "supporter of the century."
Known for his passion, Forster was also a pioneer in football merchandise, selling scarves and rosettes outside the grounds long before it became a common practice. He operated a small shop at Roker Park and was noted for his entrepreneurial spirit, even selling items to visiting international fans.
Forster retired as chairman of the Sunderland Supporters' Association in late 2021. His unwavering support, particularly during the team's success in the 2025-2026 season, was deeply appreciated. The memorial service at Sunderland Minster was attended by hundreds, including former players, with mourners traveling from as far as Northern Ireland and Iceland.
He was laid to rest in Sunderland on Monday, with a procession passing the Stadium of Light one final time as a tribute to his enduring legacy.
