Cincinnati Reds infielder Eugenio Suarez was the decisive player on the world stage Tuesday night, delivering a go-ahead double in the ninth inning of the 2026 World Baseball Classic championship game. Suarez, representing Venezuela, lined a double to left field off Garrett Whitlock, scoring a runner from second base and breaking a 2-2 tie to put Venezuela ahead 3-2.
This pivotal hit came after a dramatic two-run home run by Bryce Harper in the bottom of the eighth inning that had tied the score for the United States. Suarez's clutch performance ultimately helped Venezuela clinch its first World Baseball Classic title since the tournament began in 2006.
Now 34, Suarez enters the 2026 season with a strong reputation as one of baseball's premier power hitters, having accumulated 325 career home runs. This includes 49 home runs in the previous season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. He returns to Cincinnati with high expectations for his upcoming season at Great American Ball Park.
