Summary
- Sterling Black Bears aim for back-to-back state championships.
- Key offensive line returners include Morris, Haas, and Link.
- Senior Jace Darnauer returns after nearly 500 yards last season.
The Sterling Black Bears are entering the 2026 season with aspirations of defending their state championship title, won last season for the first time in over 43 years. Head coach Brent Schneider is focusing the team on mastering the 'little things' crucial for consistent winning.
While key offensive players Zane Farney and Wyatt Newberry have graduated, the Black Bears will rely on experienced offensive linemen Cameron Morris, Tucker Haas, and Maddox Link. Skill positions will see the return of Jace Darnauer, who amassed nearly 500 yards and seven touchdowns last season.
Defensively, Jacob Lewis is a standout player to watch, having recorded 15.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and an interception in the previous season. The team acknowledges they will have a target on their backs but are confident in their preparation.
Sterling is set to host Moundridge this Friday night to kick off their season. The team is committed to focusing on the current year's goals rather than past achievements.
