Sri Lanka Eyes Test Upset Against India

Sri Lanka's captain, Dhananjaya de Silva, has voiced optimism about his team's prospects against India in the opening Test of their two-match series, commencing August 15 at Galle International Stadium. This series marks the beginning of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. De Silva acknowledged India's formidable strength but indicated that Sri Lanka's chances increase if they can prolong the matches into their later stages.

De Silva identified India's vice-captain, KL Rahul, as the most significant threat due to his extensive experience and familiarity with Sri Lankan conditions. However, he also pointed to spinner Prabath Jayasuriya's impressive record at Galle as a considerable advantage for the home team. Jayasuriya has played more Tests than any other player in either squad, particularly at this venue.

While acknowledging the absence of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah due to injury, de Silva cautioned against underestimating India's depth. He stated that Sri Lanka has prepared thoroughly for India's bowling attack, drawing confidence from a strong recent performance against the West Indies. India will be led by Shubman Gill, with KL Rahul as vice-captain.
