Summary
- Midfielder Savannah DeMelo returns to play after cardiac arrest.
- DeMelo is suing medical partners over alleged misdiagnosis.
- The player's contract extends through 2027 with an option.
Midfielder Savannah DeMelo is scheduled to return to play for Racing Louisville FC on Saturday, marking her first appearance in over a year following a severe on-field health incident. DeMelo suffered cardiac arrest on September 14, 2025, during a match in Seattle. This return comes as she is pursuing legal action against the team's former medical partner, University of Louisville Health, alleging negligence in diagnosing a heart condition that led to the incident.
DeMelo's lawsuit claims physicians from University of Louisville Health failed to properly diagnose her condition. This legal action follows a March 2025 incident where she experienced lightheadedness and was hospitalized, initially believed to be related to hyperthyroidism medication. She had described feeling increasingly unwell during matches, struggling with rapid heart rate and breathlessness.
Despite the ongoing litigation and the emotional toll, DeMelo has signed a new contract with Racing Louisville FC through the 2027 season, with a club option for 2028. She expressed her excitement to be back on the field, calling the club her home for the past five years. This situation mirrors another NWSL incident from May 2025, when Angel City FC defender Savy King collapsed and underwent surgery for a heart abnormality.
DeMelo's return is a significant boost for Racing Louisville, which is currently last in the NWSL standings and has been eliminated from playoff contention. The club itself faces uncertainty regarding its future in Louisville, with reports of potential relocation and a search for new ownership. DeMelo has been a key player for the team, tallying 17 goals and eight assists in 79 regular-season games.
