As of November 1st, 2025, SMU has finalized a new 2-year contract extension for head coach Rhett Lashlee, keeping him with the Mustangs through 2032. The deal will make Lashlee one of the top-10 highest-paid coaches in college football.
Lashlee, 34, has been highly successful during his 4 seasons at SMU. He has led the Mustangs to a 34-15 record, including a College Football Playoff appearance last season and an American Conference championship in 2023. SMU also won its first 11 ACC regular season games after moving to the conference last year, with their first setback coming in a narrow 13-12 loss at Wake Forest last week.
The contract extension comes at a time when several high-profile coaching jobs have opened up, but Lashlee has chosen to remain at SMU. The university has provided strong support and alignment, with a new stadium end zone facility and continued investment in NIL deals for players. SMU's recruiting has also improved, with the 2025 class ranking #34 nationally, the program's highest-ever ranking, and the 2026 class currently sitting at #26.
