Bertman coached LSU baseball for 18 seasons, from 1984 to 2001, guiding the team to five College World Series championships and seven Southeastern Conference titles. Under his leadership, the Tigers achieved 870 wins, boasting a remarkable .724 win percentage. His .743 NCAA postseason career mark was a record upon his retirement.
Before Bertman, LSU baseball had won only five conference championships, with the last one nine years prior to his arrival. He transformed the program into a national powerhouse, making the NCAA Tournament in 15 of his 16 seasons. A statue of Bertman stands outside Alex Box Stadium.
Following his coaching career, Bertman moved into administration as LSU's athletic director.
