India's Rising Star Shubman Gill Gears Up for 2025 Asia Cup

Ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup, which begins on September 9, Indian cricket star Shubman Gill has been named in the 15-member squad and appointed as the team's vice-captain. Gill, who last played a T20I match before the 2024 T20 World Cup, is set to make a comeback to the format.

In a recent interview, Gill revealed the reason behind his jersey number 77. He explained that when he played the U19 World Cup, he wanted to take the number 7, but it was not available, so he chose two sevens instead. Gill also shared other personal details, such as his nickname "kaka" which means "baby" in Punjabi, his cricketing idol Sachin Tendulkar, and his current favorite cricketer Virat Kohli.

Gill had an impressive IPL 2025 season with the Gujarat Titans, scoring 650 runs from 15 matches at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87, including six half-centuries. He will be expected to replicate a similar performance during the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup.

One of the battles Gill enjoys the most in the nets is facing ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is also a part of the Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup. Gill reflected that Bumrah always tries to intimidate the batters and show them that he is the best, which Gill finds thrilling.

The 2025 Asia Cup marks the beginning of India's preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Gill, as the team's vice-captain, will have an important responsibility to shoulder in the upcoming multinational tournament.
