Shreyas Iyer Faces Fitness Battle After Rib Injury in Australia ODIs
26 Oct
Summary
- Shreyas Iyer suffered a left rib cage injury while fielding in 3rd ODI vs Australia
- Iyer could be out for at least 3 weeks, jeopardizing his availability for South Africa ODIs
- Iyer has been a consistent performer for India at number four since 2022

As of October 27th, 2025, India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has faced a fresh injury setback just when he was regaining his form. Iyer, who scored 72 runs at a strike rate of 71.2 in the recently concluded Australia ODI series, sustained a left rib cage injury during the third match in Sydney.
The incident occurred when Iyer dived to take a sharp catch off Alex Carey's bat. While completing the catch, he landed awkwardly on his left side and immediately clutched his ribs in pain. Despite the incredible effort, the injury has now put Iyer's participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30th in Ranchi, in jeopardy.
According to a BCCI source, Iyer could be out of action for a minimum of three weeks. If the injury turns out to be a hairline fracture, his recovery time may be even longer. The 30-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers for India at the crucial number four position since 2022, scoring 1430 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate nearing 100.

India's team management will be closely monitoring Iyer's progress in the coming weeks to determine his availability for the South Africa series. His absence would be a significant blow to the team's ODI setup, as they have struggled to find stability in the number four spot in recent years.
