Shrewsbury has been crowned the District 5 12U Champion, defeating Millbury 9-2 on Friday, July 18, at Casey Field. This victory marks Shrewsbury's second 12U District 5 title in three years.
The game remained close until the sixth inning when Tyler Griffin ripped a two-run double, providing breathing room for Shrewsbury. Coach Andrew Coletti highlighted this hit as the turning point, followed by key hits from Joey Murgo and Kyle Busenburg that extended the lead.
Pitcher Wes Duerden was instrumental, throwing a complete game. He allowed just two unearned runs on three hits and two walks, striking out nine batters. Duerden also contributed offensively with an RBI single in the fifth inning, giving Shrewsbury a 3-2 lead.
Millbury had tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning after being no-hit for the first 3⅓ innings. Biagio Cesaitis broke up the no-hitter with a single, loading the bases, and Cam Curran followed with a two-run single. Duerden, however, escaped the inning by striking out the next two batters.
With this championship win, Shrewsbury advances to the Section 2 state tournament, set to begin on Tuesday, July 21. They will compete against Taunton East, Bridgewater, and Hingham.
