Sharks Prospect Stenberg Impresses Scouts Despite Youth
15 Sep
Summary
- Top prospect Ivar Stenberg scored two goals at the Rookie Faceoff.
- Scouts noted Stenberg's obvious skill but sometimes did too much.
- His NHL readiness depends on roster depth and team playoff goals.
San Jose Sharks prospect Ivar Stenberg made a notable impression at the recent Rookie Faceoff, scoring two goals. Multiple NHL scouts observed his "obvious skill," though some noted he attempted to force plays, which is common for young players adapting to the smaller North American rink.
Despite being young, Stenberg displayed a defensive awareness that could aid his transition. The Sharks' increased depth and focus on making the playoffs this season, following the acquisition of veteran players, may impact his immediate opportunities compared to previous prospects.
Head coach John McCarthy highlighted that prospects like Stenberg should dominate such tournaments. He cited examples like Collin Graf and Macklin Celebrini, who used similar events as springboards. Stenberg's next test will be the NHL preseason, where he must elevate his pace to compete.
