The Dallas Mavericks selected Sergio De Larrea with the 30th pick in last month's NBA Draft, trading up five spots to acquire the Spanish guard. De Larrea, who played for Valencia last season, shared that his fandom for the Mavericks began in his youth, inspired by Luka Doncic.
De Larrea explained that he viewed Doncic as his idol during his younger years, influencing his long-standing support for the team. Doncic, who joined Real Madrid at 13 and later became the youngest EuroLeague MVP, was acquired by the Mavericks in 2018.
Doncic's transition to the NBA was impressive, and De Larrea was captivated by his success. Although Doncic's tenure with the Mavericks concluded in February 2025 when he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, De Larrea's NBA career is just commencing.
The 20-year-old De Larrea signed a four-year deal with the Mavericks on Friday. He will have opportunities to showcase his skills during the upcoming two-week summer league and may compete for backup guard minutes in the fall. De Larrea averaged 9.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists for Valencia last season.
