SEC Expands Conference Games, Texas Keeps Marquee Matchups
28 Aug
Summary
- SEC adds 9th conference game starting in 2026
- Texas maintains upcoming non-conference games with Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame
- Alabama cancels West Virginia series to focus on other power opponents

According to the news, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has announced that its teams will play an additional conference game starting in 2026, expanding the schedule from 8 to 9 conference games. Additionally, SEC teams will be required to play at least one power conference opponent among their 3 non-conference games.
Despite this change, the University of Texas has confirmed that it will not be canceling any of its upcoming high-profile non-conference games. Texas is set to visit Ohio State this Saturday in a top-3 matchup, and the Longhorns have future home-and-home series scheduled with Ohio State in 2026, Michigan in 2027, and Notre Dame in 2028 and 2029.
In contrast, the University of Alabama has already canceled its planned 2026 and 2027 home-and-home series with West Virginia. The Crimson Tide have other power conference opponents on their schedule in those years, including Florida State in 2026 and Ohio State in 2027, making the West Virginia games expendable.
