A week prior to their appearance in the Isleta New Mexico Bowl against No. 23 North Texas, San Diego State has promoted Demetrius Sumler to defensive coordinator. Sumler, a San Diego native, has been an integral part of the Aztecs coaching staff since 2016, progressing from graduate assistant to assistant coach and most recently adding pass game coordinator duties.
Under Sumler's guidance, the Aztecs' pass defense has demonstrated remarkable performance throughout the season. They currently lead the Mountain West Conference in yards allowed per attempt (5.1), pass efficiency rating (99.06), and passing yards allowed per game (157). This defensive strength was highlighted by cornerback Chris Johnson's breakout season, earning him multiple All-America selections.
The Aztecs concluded their regular season with a 9-3 overall record. They now prepare to face North Texas in the New Mexico Bowl on December 27th, with kickoff scheduled for 2:45 p.m. PT in Albuquerque. This transition marks a new chapter for the SDSU defense under Sumler's leadership.
