4 Sep
Summary
- San Diego State boasts a revamped roster with key returning stars.
- New offensive line starters face integration challenges.
- The defense seeks to replace significant pass rush production.
The San Diego State Aztecs are embarking on a new chapter as they host Portland State on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium. The team has undergone a significant roster transformation, a common trend in the era of the transfer portal and NIL.
Fans will be keen to see how returning stars like running back Lucky Sutton and quarterback Jayen Denegal perform, alongside new recruits. Crucial to the team's success will be the integration of the offensive line, with only two starters returning from last season. The defense also faces the challenge of replacing substantial pass-rushing contributions from departed players.
The secondary has seen a complete overhaul with new starters at all five positions, most notably after the departure of star cornerback Chris Johnson. The game against Portland State, with sophomore quarterback Tyrese Smith, will be an early test for these new defensive units.
