Sabastian Sawe of Kenya, the first man to officially run a marathon in under two hours, is scheduled to compete in the Berlin Marathon this September. Organizers confirmed his participation on Wednesday, May 14, 2026.
Sawe, aged 31, achieved his remarkable one hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds performance in London last month. He returns to competition to defend his Berlin title on September 27. Sawe stated his intention to prepare thoroughly and run as fast as possible on the renowned Berlin course.
The Berlin Marathon is celebrated for its flat and fast profile, having witnessed nine men's world records between 1998 and 2022. Sawe previously won the Berlin Marathon in 2025 with a time of two hours, two minutes, and 16 seconds, setting the year's best time despite high temperatures.
His compatriot Eliud Kipchoge holds the current course record of 2:01:09, set in 2022. The 2026 Berlin Marathon is anticipated to host close to 60,000 participants from approximately 160 nations.
