Save Women's Hockey India League: Captain's Plea

India's women's hockey team achieved its best World Cup performance in 52 years, securing fifth place after a 3-1 victory over Germany. This historic success has prompted captain Savita Punia to make an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the future of the Women's Hockey India League (WHIL).

Punia highlighted the WHIL's critical role in developing players and creating opportunities for aspiring athletes. She emphasized that the league is essential for building a strong talent pipeline necessary for future international success, including World Cup and Olympic medals. The appeal was made on social media, tagging various government officials, sporting personalities, and potential corporate sponsors.

In addition to reaching out to the Prime Minister and sports minister, Punia also appealed to prominent figures in sports and entertainment, such as Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, to use their influence to garner support and visibility for women's hockey. She also engaged with organizations like Reliance Foundation and individuals like Nita Ambani, citing their contributions to grassroots sports.

Punia stressed that the team's recent World Cup success was achieved despite the challenges faced by the WHIL. She posited that increased investment in the league could unlock even greater potential for Indian women's hockey, ensuring a sustainable future for the sport and its rising stars.
