Saudi Arabia Withdraws 2035 Rugby World Cup Bid
17 Apr
Summary
- Saudi Arabia has abandoned its 2035 Rugby World Cup hosting bid.
- PIF's new financial strategy prioritizes projects with returns.
- LIV Golf funding will be withdrawn next year due to PIF's new focus.

Saudi Arabia has abandoned its aspirations to host the 2035 Rugby World Cup. This decision stems from the Public Investment Fund's (PIF) new financial strategy, which emphasizes projects demonstrating value realization.
Last year, the sports minister had confirmed Saudi's interest in bidding for the tournament. However, the kingdom has not submitted an expression of interest to World Rugby, and no such plans are anticipated before the bidding process closes in October. A potential joint bid with Qatar and the UAE has also not materialized.
LIV Golf is identified as a high-profile casualty, with its funding to be withdrawn next year, necessitating private investment for its continuation. PIF plans to redirect its sports investments towards domestic projects, including infrastructure for the 2034 FIFA World Cup and a Formula One track near Riyadh.
While global economic uncertainty, partly due to the war in Iran, influences spending, the decision to withdraw from the rugby bid reportedly predates the conflict. PIF governor Yasir al-Rumayyan confirmed that all spending projects are under review due to the dynamic economic situation.
In contrast, Qatar has secured a deal to host the second final series of the new Nations Championship in 2028. Despite having the necessary infrastructure for global events, Qatar's current focus is on bidding for the 2036 Olympics.
