23 Oct
Summary
- Japan FA president warns Saudi security situation makes hosting difficult.
- Attacks by Houthis raise doubts about the 2027 Asian Cup's viability.
- Saudi organizers insist preparations are on schedule despite concerns.

The planned hosting of the 2027 Asian Cup by Saudi Arabia faces significant challenges, according to Japan Football Association President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto. He cited the current security situation in the country, exacerbated by escalating attacks from Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis, as a major impediment to holding the tournament from January 7 to February 5, 2027.
Miyamoto conveyed that the safety of players, fans, and attendees is the top priority, and the Saudi side is working with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to make a decision regarding the tournament's feasibility. This comes as several other major sporting events in Saudi Arabia have been disrupted or postponed. For example, golf's Asian Tour postponed the Saudi International indefinitely, and cycling's Urban World Championships were canceled after a deadly attack on Riyadh's international airport.
Despite these international concerns, the local organizing committee (LOC) for the Asian Cup has stated that preparations are progressing according to the approved schedule. They are continuing to monitor developments to ensure the necessary conditions for a successful delivery of the tournament. The Saudi government has made substantial investments in sports, with the Asian Cup seen as a precursor to their bid for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
