Summary
- Sardar Patel University women's kabaddi team withdrawn from upcoming West Zone Inter-University Kabaddi Tournament
- Team had finalized 18-member squad, conducted practices, and issued player IDs
- University officials have not provided any explanation for the sudden decision

A fresh controversy has emerged at Sardar Patel University (SPU) in Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat, as the institution's women's kabaddi team has been abruptly withdrawn from the upcoming West Zone Inter-University Kabaddi Tournament. The tournament, hosted by Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University in Nanded, Maharashtra, is scheduled to begin on October 28, 2025.
Prior to the sudden decision, SPU's selection committee had finalized an 18-member squad, conducted practice sessions, and even issued identity cards to the players. The kabaddi camp, held between October 9 and 18, saw the players balancing both examinations and training. During the Diwali vacations, several outstation players stayed back in hostels or with relatives to continue their preparations.
However, on October 22, 2025, the team captain was informed by the coach that the university would not be participating in the tournament. Surprised by this sudden move, the players tried to reach out to the vice-chancellor, registrar, and other officials, but received no response.
On October 26, 2025, former syndicate member Alpesh Purohit raised the issue with Anand district collector Praveen Chaudhary and university authorities, stating that "it seems that due to some internal politics, the women's team, which put in immense hard work, is being deprived of this opportunity." Purohit has called for an independent inquiry by the district collector, but SPU officials have not yet issued any clarification regarding the sudden decision.
