Veteran Infielder Espinal Lands Minor League Deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks have bolstered their infield depth by signing veteran infielder Santiago Espinal to a minor league contract. Espinal, previously with the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, will initially join the Triple-A Reno Aces. During his time with the Dodgers, the 31-year-old appeared in 36 games, posting a .268 batting average.

Espinal was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on June 16, and later signed with the Texas Rangers, though he did not reach the major league roster with them. He is recognized primarily as a high-end defensive player with versatility, having played all infield and outfield positions during his major league career.

This acquisition comes as the Diamondbacks face potential infield needs. Nolan Arenado is managing a torso injury, and second baseman Ketel Marte remains on the Restricted List. Rookie infielder Jose Fernandez was recently recalled from Reno to address these situations, highlighting the team's need for reliable depth as the playoff race intensifies.
