Sam Kerr Returns to NWSL After Chelsea Stint

Sam Kerr, a celebrated forward and the NWSL's leading scorer, has officially returned to the league, signing a contract with reigning champions Gotham FC through the 2030 season. This landmark signing comes after her successful six-year tenure with Chelsea in England concluded.

Kerr, who previously played for Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC) from 2015-2017, brings a wealth of experience and a proven record to her new/old team. Her 77 career regular-season goals remain an NWSL record, and she previously earned MVP and Golden Boot honors in 2017. Her return is highly anticipated, with her debut scheduled for July 15.

Despite her stellar career, Kerr is not eligible for the NWSL's new High Impact Player rule. This is largely attributed to her missing approximately 20 months of play after suffering an ACL tear in January 2024. Her return to the United States also follows her recent marriage to fellow player Kristie Mewis and the birth of their child.
