Saints Re-Sign Austin Jr. & Welch to Practice Squad
3 Sep
Summary
- Kevin Austin Jr. and Treyton Welch rejoin Saints practice squad.
- Both players were previously on the 53-man roster.
- Saints' wide receiver depth is impacted by injuries.

The New Orleans Saints have bolstered their practice squad with the signings of wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. and tight end Treyton Welch. These players were previously part of the Saints' initial 53-man roster but were waived to make room for other acquisitions, and have now been re-signed after clearing waivers.
Austin Jr., a product of Notre Dame, has participated in 16 games for New Orleans across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. He has recorded 24 receptions for nearly 300 yards and one touchdown during his tenure.
Welch, a rookie from the University of Wyoming, concluded the 2026 preseason with four catches for 25 receiving yards. The 6'4" tight end, originally from Minnesota, is primarily known for his blocking but also utilizes his size and agility against smaller defensive players.
Currently, the Saints' practice squad includes four wide receivers and two tight ends. With only four wideouts on the active roster, it is highly probable that Austin Jr. or Welch, or both, could play for the team this year, especially given the persistent injury issues experienced throughout the offseason.
