Doan: Sabres Stronger Than Last Year Despite Trades

Forward Josh Doan remains optimistic about the Buffalo Sabres' prospects for the upcoming season, asserting that the team has actually improved despite significant offseason departures. He acknowledged external skepticism but stated the current group feels more confident than ever.

The Sabres notably traded defenseman Bowen Byram, who was second in points and ice time among team defensemen last season, to the Chicago Blackhawks. This move secured the No. 4 overall pick, used to select defenseman Daxon Rudolph. Byram's departure, with another year left on his contract, was a surprise to Doan.

Additionally, forward Alex Tuch was moved to the Washington Capitals in a sign-and-trade agreement. Tuch was a crucial offensive player for Buffalo, ranking second in goals, points, and average ice time. While his departure as a pending free agent was a possibility, the team now looks to internal growth to fill the void.

Buffalo's most significant offseason acquisition is 22-year-old defenseman Olen Zellweger, who contributed 22 points for the Anaheim Ducks last season. Doan himself, entering the first year of a seven-year, $6.95 million AAV contract, is expected to play a larger role. Acquired in the 2025 offseason, Doan is coming off a breakout season with 25 goals and 52 points, helping the Sabres end a 14-year playoff drought.
