Rutgers has secured a significant addition to its wrestling program with the commitment of heavyweight Daniel Herrera from the transfer portal. The announcement was made on Sunday via Instagram, confirming Herrera will join the Scarlet Knights with three years of eligibility remaining.
Herrera transferred from Iowa State, where he redshirted this past season. As a true freshman, he achieved a 29-15 record and secured a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships, although he went 0-2.
The arrival of Herrera addresses the need at the heavyweight position, following Hunter Catka's transfer to Virginia Tech. Rutgers also has a strong future prospect in Lukas Zalota, a highly-ranked heavyweight junior. Herrera was previously ranked No. 35 overall in the Class of 2024.
