Rutgers Football Preps for Season Opener with Depth Chart Decisions

Rutgers football has recently concluded its training camp, with the team holding a second and important scrimmage on Saturday, August 5th. Head coach Greg Schiano discussed the team's progress after the scrimmage, highlighting the depth at multiple positions and the ongoing process of determining starting and backup roles ahead of the season opener in just two weeks.

The Scarlet Knights spent time before the scrimmage focusing on situational football, preparing themselves for various game scenarios they may face throughout the season. Many starters participated in positional drills but sat out the scrimmage, which was used to evaluate roster depth and finalize the depth chart.

Schiano commented on the development of the team's three backup quarterbacks, stating that they have all shown improvement, with AJ Surace looking the most comfortable due to his additional experience. The Rutgers coaching staff is also closely monitoring the competition to replace star offensive tackle Hollin Pierce, who is now in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. While a final decision has not been made, multiple players have impressed during training camp, and the team's depth at the position has been showcased due to some minor injuries.

Additionally, Schiano discussed the young talent at the linebacker position, noting that while the veteran starters will anchor the unit, the freshman linebackers have shown flashes of their potential. The defensive line is another area where the Scarlet Knights are still evaluating their options, with a multitude of transfers and returning players vying for playing time.
