Rutgers Football Faces Tough Running Back Battle Ahead of New Season
22 Aug
Summary
- Rutgers has three quality running backs competing for carries
- No clear lead back has emerged, coaches plan to rotate them
- Replacing production of star RB Kyle Monangai, now with Chicago Bears

As Rutgers football prepares for the upcoming 2025 season, the coaching staff faces an enviable problem - a three-way battle for the starting running back job. CJ Campell Jr., a transfer from Florida Atlantic, Antwan Raymond, who impressed as a true freshman last year, and Ja'shon Benjamin are all vying for the opportunity to replace the production of star running back Kyle Monangai, who is now with the Chicago Bears.
Head coach Greg Schiano has made it clear that all three backs will see significant playing time in the early going, as none have separated themselves enough to be considered the clear-cut lead option. However, Schiano also stated that if one of the trio gets into a rhythm, he won't hesitate to ride that player. Running backs coach Damiere Shaw and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca will work to manage the rotation, taking advantage of the different skillsets each back brings to the table.
While the Scarlet Knights would prefer to have a definitive starting running back, Schiano acknowledged that having three talented, proven options is a good problem to have, especially at such a physically demanding position. As the season progresses, one of the three could emerge as the lead back, but for now, Rutgers will rely on a committee approach to replace the production of one of the most prolific running backs in program history.
