Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano have announced their return to mixed martial arts for a major bout on May 16th at Intuit Dome. Rousey declared this fight the biggest in MMA today, highlighting their immense international recognition. Both were instrumental figures in the early days of women's MMA, with Carano being an early television star and Rousey influencing the UFC to establish women's divisions.
Carano, 44, last fought in 2009, while Rousey, 39, last competed in 2016. Despite their departures into entertainment careers, the allure of this specific matchup brought them back. Carano revealed she married Muay Thai fighter Kevin Ross. Rousey proposed the fight over a year ago, even while pregnant, and stated this is the only bout that could inspire her return.
Rousey also sharply criticized the UFC's financial offer, calling it significantly lower than her current earnings. She believes the UFC's corporate leadership has stifled fighter pay. The event, promoted by Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions, will feature five five-minute rounds. Former UFC champion Francis Ngannou is also scheduled to fight on the card.
