This unfortunate development occurred after Ray allowed a leadoff walk, followed by a single, a sacrifice fly, and another hit, bringing his pitch count to 68. He had previously struggled in the second inning, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks over 42 pitches. Right-hander Griffin Canning began warming up in the bullpen during the third inning. Right-handed pitcher David Morgan had also warmed up in the second but did not enter the game. The Padres are in a critical part of their season, currently vying with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final wild-card spot in the National League with only 21 games remaining.
