The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium site is entering a transformative phase with the unveiling of conceptual renderings for a new, $3.7 billion stadium. Designed by HKS, the modern, multi-purpose venue is slated for completion in 2030, coinciding with the final demolition stages of the original RFK Stadium. This development is part of a significant 180-acre mixed-use campus along the Anacostia River.
The design aims to honor the legacy of the old stadium while aligning with the city's monumental axis. The new venue is expected to host 65,000 to 70,000 spectators. The broader redevelopment plan encompasses 5,000 to 6,000 new homes, including affordable units, alongside youth sports facilities, retail, hotels, and substantial public green spaces.
Years of planning culminated in this vision after the original stadium closed in 2019. Federal control of the site was transferred to D.C. via a 99-year lease signed into law in January 2025. While the stadium is on schedule, full mixed-use development might extend into the 2040s due to zoning reviews, though community input has been actively sought.
