Reds Suffer Heartbreaking 11th-Inning Loss to Diamondbacks
23 Aug
Summary
- Reds lose 6-5 to Diamondbacks in 11 innings
- Mets maintain 1-game lead over Reds for final playoff spot
- Reds score go-ahead run in 10th but Diamondbacks tie it

As the New York Mets were extending their lead in the National League wild card race on August 22nd, the Cincinnati Reds were dealt a tough 6-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 11 innings at Chase Field.
The Reds had taken the lead in the top of the 10th inning, but the Diamondbacks responded with a game-tying run in the bottom half. In the 11th, the Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. delivered the walk-off single against Scott Barlow to hand the Reds a devastating defeat.
The loss was especially painful for the Reds, who are chasing the Mets for the final National League playoff spot. With the Mets winning earlier in the day, the Reds' deficit in the standings grew to 1.5 games. Manager Terry Francona acknowledged the sting of the loss, saying "A loss is a loss, and they all hurt. When they end like this, it's a little fresher when (media) get in here. That part's a little harder."
Despite the heartbreaking finish, the Reds showed fight, rallying from an early deficit to tie the game in the 8th inning on a clutch hit by Miguel Andujar. However, their efforts ultimately fell short as the Diamondbacks prevailed in the extra-inning thriller.
