Red Sox Star Bregman Opts Out of $120M Deal, Hits Free Agency

Two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman is set to test the free agent market once again, as he has opted out of the 3-year, $120 million deal he signed with the Boston Red Sox last offseason. The 31-year-old All-Star will join a highly anticipated 2026 free agent class that includes sluggers like Pete Alonso, Kyle Tucker, and Bo Bichette.

In the 2025 season, Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 over 114 games, earning his third All-Star nomination. However, he missed several games in late May after suffering a right quad strain. Bregman had turned down a 6-year, $171.5 million offer from the Detroit Tigers, as well as a 4-year, $115 million proposal from the Chicago Cubs, before signing with the Red Sox.
