Red Sox Acquire Contreras: A Bold Move for Bat Power
22 Dec
Summary
- Red Sox secure Willson Contreras for right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins.
- Contreras brings a needed right-handed bat and first base stability.
- Trade allows Triston Casas to ease back from injury.

The Boston Red Sox announced Sunday they acquired first baseman Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals. This move injects a much-needed right-handed bat into the Red Sox's lineup. In exchange for Contreras, the Red Sox are sending pitcher Hunter Dobbins, along with minor-league pitchers Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita, and cash considerations to St. Louis. Contreras, who has two years and $41.5 million remaining on his contract, provides veteran stability at first base.
Contreras's arrival addresses the Red Sox's uncertainty at first base following Triston Casas's season-ending injury last May. Casas, a left-handed hitter, will now have more time to ease back into playing, and a platoon situation with Contreras is possible. Contreras, 33, played first base extensively last season, demonstrating strong defensive capabilities with six Outs Above Average.
This trade marks the second significant deal between the Red Sox and Cardinals this offseason, following Boston's acquisition of starter Sonny Gray in November. For the Cardinals, trading Contreras opens up first base for Alec Burleson, a promising slugger. This move aligns with the Cardinals' apparent rebuild strategy under President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom.
