20 Mar
Summary
- Taylor Walls will begin the season on the injured list.
- Walls sustained a right oblique injury in batting practice.
- Carson Williams is the top prospect expected to replace Walls.

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls has been placed on the injured list to begin the 2026 season due to a right oblique injury. Walls sustained the injury on Tuesday while in the batting cage, with imaging on Wednesday confirming the extent of the issue.
President of baseball operations Erik Neander indicated on Thursday that there is no immediate timetable for Walls' return, but he could be sidelined for approximately one month. The light-hitting Walls is highly valued for his defensive prowess. Last season, he played in 101 games, batting .220 with four home runs and 38 RBIs.
With Walls unavailable, the Rays are expected to turn to their top prospect, Carson Williams, to handle shortstop duties for Opening Day on March 26. Williams, 22, has shown flashes of power in limited major league appearances and at Triple-A Durham, though hitting for average remains an area for development.
