The New York Rangers are poised for a defensive transformation in the 2026-27 season, marked by the acquisition of puck-moving defensemen Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson. Durzi and Pettersson, acquired via trades in July, debuted in the preseason home opener against the New York Islanders. Although the Rangers lost the game 4-3 after squandering a three-goal lead, Sullivan lauded the new pairing's ability to move the puck. He highlighted Durzi's mobility and puck skills, and Pettersson's size, defensive acumen, and puck-moving capabilities.
Sullivan, who previously coached Pettersson with the Pittsburgh Penguins, believes the new duo will significantly enhance the Rangers' defense. They are expected to form the second pairing behind Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov. Durzi played a team-high 23:32 in the preseason opener, recording a secondary assist, while Pettersson blocked two shots. Both players expressed enthusiasm for their developing partnership despite a condensed training camp, aiming to be ready for the regular season opener on September 29th against the Boston Bruins.
