Rams QB Search: Garoppolo Eyes Retirement, Draft Looms
20 Apr
Summary
- Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly considering retirement, impacting Rams' backup QB plans.
- The Rams may need to draft a quarterback due to Garoppolo's uncertain future.
- Nussmeier and Simpson are potential quarterback prospects for the Rams in the draft.
The Los Angeles Rams are facing a pivotal decision regarding their backup quarterback position as veteran Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly contemplates retirement. Garoppolo, who served as Matthew Stafford's primary backup for the past two seasons, remained unsigned throughout the offseason, signaling a potential shift.
With Garoppolo's future uncertain, the Rams are now expected to prioritize acquiring a quarterback through the NFL Draft. While Stetson Bennett is already in the system, his limited passing upside makes him a less desirable long-term option. The Rams have reportedly shown interest in LSU's Nussmeier and potentially Ty Simpson, with draft strategies possibly involving trades to secure these prospects.
The team's approach to the draft will significantly influence their post-Stafford era plans. A Day 2 selection like Nussmeier could provide a reliable backup, whereas drafting a player like Simpson, potentially higher up, would signal expectations of a future starting role, despite his limited experience. This situation underscores the Rams' need for a clear quarterback plan beyond their current starter.
