Raiders' QB O'Connell: A Diamond in Rough?
21 Nov
Summary
- Aidan O'Connell has consistently performed well despite coaching instability.
- The Raiders' offensive line has significantly hampered quarterback performance.
- O'Connell has never been given a true opportunity to develop as a starter.

Aidan O'Connell has consistently stepped up for the Las Vegas Raiders, even as the team faces persistent quarterback issues. Over his three seasons, he has navigated three different offensive coordinators and multiple coaching staffs, yet generally delivers when called upon. This resilience is particularly notable given the significant deficiencies along the Raiders' offensive line, which have made even experienced quarterbacks appear incompetent.
Despite his efforts, O'Connell has never been afforded a legitimate opportunity to grow as the team's starting quarterback. His rookie season, where he went 5-4, was the only time he played meaningful minutes, and that was partly due to circumstance. The Raiders' front office has failed to build a stable offensive coaching staff or roster conducive to developing any quarterback, including O'Connell.
As of November 21, 2025, O'Connell continues to await another chance. He recently expressed excitement about returning to practice after a wrist injury sidelined him during the preseason. While Geno Smith currently holds the starting role with slim chances of being benched, O'Connell remains ready to step in should the situation change.
