During the first race of the China GT in Shanghai, a significant crash on Saturday led to a Ferrari bursting into flames. Dutch driver Loek Hartog immediately halted his own race, despite no safety marshals being present.
Hartog then courageously worked to free British driver Ollie Millroy from the wreckage. After partially removing a door, he used a fire extinguisher to combat the flames before pulling Millroy out. Millroy was hospitalized with multiple fractures and a bruised lung.
Millroy expressed profound gratitude, stating he owes his life to Hartog's bravery. Hartog, 23, felt no hesitation in assisting, believing Millroy might not have escaped on his own. The race was ultimately abandoned.
Millroy's team, FIST Auto, has announced it will not compete further in the China GT until safety issues are discussed with organizers. The China GT organizers have acknowledged shortcomings and pledged to review their emergency response and safety protocols.
