25 Aug
Summary
- Brandon Smith charged with supplying dangerous drugs, betting misconduct
- Smith informed Rabbitohs he will plead not guilty to the charges
- Rabbitohs will not stand down Smith ahead of upcoming match against Roosters
In a concerning development, South Sydney Rabbitohs star Brandon Smith has been charged by Queensland police with supplying dangerous drugs and using or disclosing inside information for betting purposes. The former Melbourne Storm premiership-winner was questioned by police upon his arrival at Coolangatta Airport ahead of the Rabbitohs' Round 23 match against the Gold Coast Titans.
Initially released without charge, Smith was formally charged on August 20 following further investigations by Taskforce Maxima, a branch of the Organised Crime Gangs Group. However, the 26-year-old has informed the Rabbitohs that he will plead not guilty to the charges and is determined to fight the case.
Despite the serious allegations, the Rabbitohs have stated there is "no way" they will stand down Smith for their upcoming Round 27 clash against rivals the Sydney Roosters. The club's CEO, Blake Solly, has confirmed that the charges do not meet the NRL's automatic no-fault stand-down criteria, allowing Smith to continue playing for the time being.

The Rabbitohs have informed the NRL Integrity Unit about the allegations against Smith, but the club has chosen to make no further comment as the matter is part of an ongoing Queensland Police investigation.
