PSG's Goalkeeper Gamble Backfires as Chevalier Struggles to Impress

In a surprising move last summer, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) signed goalkeeper Chevalier from Lille for a €40 million fee. This came after reports that PSG had informed Gianluigi Donnarumma, their previous first-choice keeper, that he would no longer hold that position. Head coach Luis Enrique was keen to bring in a new goalkeeper that better fit his system.

However, Chevalier's performances since the start of the 2025-26 season have not lived up to expectations. The former Lille star has shown moments of poor concentration and made questionable decisions, raising concerns about his ability to thrive at a club of PSG's stature.

This vulnerability was on full display in September, when Chevalier failed to deal with a cross against Marseille, allowing an easy header goal. He was also culpable for costly errors in PSG's 3-3 draw against Strasbourg, leaving the team exposed at critical moments. Former France goalkeeper Lionel Charbonnier has criticized Chevalier's performances, saying "the suit is too big for Chevalier" and that he lacks the necessary charisma and experience.

With Donnarumma now playing for Manchester City in the Premier League, PSG's goalkeeper situation has become a source of concern. The club's gamble on Chevalier has not paid off so far, and they may need to address this position again in the near future to shore up their defense.
